The bones of the current Lexus GX have been on the road longer than the Lexus spindle grille has graced the faces of the Japanese luxury brand's cars and SUVs, dating back to basically 2010. Lexus's most off-road-oriented SUV has received a couple of facelifts in that time, and thankfully improved the interior features to recently include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but now it could be time for something totally new with the 2024 model.

Partly because of its outta-a-different-era age, the present Lexus GX offers an interesting blend of a body-on-frame, luxury full-size SUV with a naturally-aspirated V-8 good for 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque. In our Buyer's Guide, we praise its newer infotainment system, off-road capability, and its quiet, comfortable ride, but it suffers from a few drawbacks including poor fuel efficiency, a relatively cramped cargo space, and it could use some updated safety features.

Enter the 2024 Lexus GX, teased just after another Lexus SUV, the TX, was also teased, putting to rest the speculation that the TX might spell the end of the GX. You see, the TX is slated to be a three-row people mover, a likely car-based (think Toyota's Grand Highlander), more spacious answer to family-friendly luxury SUVs such as the Audi Q7, Acura MDX, and others.

The GX, meanwhile, is expected to stick with just two rows, or perhaps sprout a vestigial, occasional-use third row like the current model has, while adopting a more rugged focus. (Just look at the image at top, which depicts the rear 3/4-angle view of the new GX—those fenders are beefy!) We also expect it to ride on Lexus parent company Toyota's GA-F body-on-frame platform—i.e., the same new structure that underpins the newest Tundra pickup, Land Cruiser and Lexus LX SUVs, and the upcoming Tacoma pickup, and it could get a new hybrid powertrain to replace its aging V-8 setup.

So far, only a handful of teaser images have been teased, along with the promise of a June 8, 2023 debut. The images show a sharper chiseled body style, namely a hood that bulges over the wheel fenders, and there's also an image of the rear badging that doesn't reveal too much.
